1997 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 liter automatic 2wd. Trouble codes that caused the check engine light to just come on are p0171 and P0174. My check engine scanner indicates that both banks are running lean. What would cause this? What should I be looking for? Any advice or recommendations? O2 sensors?

I had those codes in my 04 Ranger, replaced the fuel filter & away I went ....... (y)

I had researched the issue when it occurred. it seemed the fuel filter was the number 1 cause of the lean condition.
another cause is a hose /plastic pipe connection on the top of the engine that leaks due to age & heat.
that is about all I remember about the issue

a fuel pressure check will not hurt anything, that is for sure.

I'm going to do some testing and will let you know. I am suspecting my MAF sensor to be faulty. I just cleaned it 2-3 months ago. Is there a tutorial on how to replace my MAF sensor? It is a 1997 ford ranger xlt 4.0 ohv with the conical cone type air filter, so round housing??
