i have a 1997 ford ranger with a 2.3 5 speed i have a cel on and took it to advance and they said it was purge suystem malfunction and egr but didnt say what the egr was doing . i just did a tune up fresh wires and plugs . coil pack i got from a junk yard but did test them and they work fine new o2 sensor idle air control and new wiring harness for tps . when im in 1st gear it putts but if u give it more gas it will clear the guy said my egr valve might be causing the putting and sending the code for the purge valve mafuction but ive also read on here that the canister could clog up to so if anyone is been through this or know a lil more than i do then please post some answers. the truck has 240000 and runs great but its the putting and the fuel milieage is whats killing me it should be getting bot 30 or more like it was now its only getting about 24 or less

The purge thing is likely the hose from the evap canister and the 2 sensor/switches that are attached. They'll run you about $90 combined at the parts store. I used a section of fuel line to replace the line. Mine hasn't complained since. Though I did have to rig a vacuum T-fitting and a cap for the part that came right out of the canister (2 different size hose diameters, didn't feel like buying the special hose).

We could probably help you more if you could post the actual codes it's giving you. In fact I would almost guarantee it.

I had an evap code (P1443) awhile back and had found some tips here about cleaning the purge solenoid and valve before spending the cash on new parts. I flushed the ports with brake cleaner several times and let dry.

As Captain Ledd did, I also used some fuel-grade hose to replace the old, deteriorated hose. As for the special hose that connects to the canister and has larger diameter on one end, I just used a drill bit to enlarge the inner diameter of one end of a piece of 1/4" I.D. fuel hose. After some work I was able to get it to slip over the larger canister fitting.

Within a day of driving, the check engine light went away.

Just a guess, but your other code relating to the EGR is likely a bad DPFE sensor. I changed mine twice on my 95.

Definitely post your actual OBD-II codes. More guys will chime in with help. I know at Advance Auto they give you a small print-out with the codes to take with you so you don't have try and remember them.
