Has any one here put a 2.9 in a 1997 style ranger ? just curious thats all.

it would be possible with quite a bit of wiring work, engine mounts, a transmission, a starter, a radiator, and lots of time. a 4.0 swap would be a little easier wiring wise and the benefits would outweigh those of a 2.9 swap by alot.

So no one has done this yet?

Not that I've heard of.

The difference in engine management systems is going to make it a wiring nightmare. You'll need a bunch of donor stuff to make it work. I am not saying it's impossible, but that it will take a great effort.

The most simplistic would be to swap in something from the same model year.

Even if you do go through the hassle of getting it going, I don't think you would be as happy with the result as far as power/fuel economy. But that's just my opinion.

Plus, I believe the rule of thumb is that you need to install a newer or same model year engine for it to be legal from an emissions stand point. A lot of people state that they're not getting checked, but who's to say they won't start 4 years down the road?
