1996 ranger header covers glowing

i have a 96 ranger 4.3 just changed the timing belt and had the cat cut off . when you start the truck it has a very high idle and if you put the pedal to the floor it wants to cut off the covers are getting red when reving but not when just running...when set timing key mark to top and line diamond and triangle up...any suggestions on where to go from here??

4.3? Just to clarify, don't know if its suppose to be 4.0 or a GM 4.3 swapped in.

Normal for the manifold to glow like that. Can't tell you about the high idle except to look for vacuum leaks or binding throttle linkages.

Header glowing on idle and when revving? Don't think it's really normal, truck must be running hella lean. For the high idle you would be looking at stuck IACV or vaccuum leaks..
