I have a 1996 Ranger with automatic hub problems. The hubs did not want to engage. Had a mechanic pull both hubs, clean, lube with ATF and install. The hubs will engage/disengage on a lift no problem. The hubs engage better now but do not want to fully disengage. The truck will be in 2wd and when backing up I can hear a bump. This would usually mean the hub is trying to disengage. When I go forward the hub starts to grind like it is partially engaged. The only way to stop it is to engage 4wd on the go and to then disengage to 2wd. This will stop all grinding noises until I back up again. Are my hubs still not clean and lubed enough? Are one or both hubs busted. My mechanic has even questioned the transfer case. The truck has 97,000 miles and very little off-road time.

Just get a pair of warn hubs, they're stronger, dependable and relatively easy to put in...granted you have to get out to engage them, you wont have to mess with them as much as the crappy ford auto hubs. I picked a lightly used pair up for 90 and they work great :icon_hornsup:
