1996 Ford Ranger 5 speed swap

I have a 1996 Ford ranger 4.0 5 speed 4x4 and my transmission has gone bad. My boss has a 1999 Ford ranger 4.0 5 speed 4x4. Both trucks have same engine and transmission to my knowledge so I should be able to swap transmission no problem. Only problem i have found is my 1996 ranger calls for a different clutch compared to 1999 model years according to rockauto. So with that being said, what clutch kit should I buy the clutch kit for the 1996 ranger or a 1999 ranger. My boss said I could have it for 200 bucks since frame rusted in half.

First picture is clutch kit for 1996 Ford ranger and bottom picture is clutch kit for 1999 Ford ranger.

quick double check of the tech library and I would agree you should have the same trans.. just to double check might look at the door tags on both and verify M, and a quick glance underneath (just in case some previous owner swapped em on ya - read the ID guide to see the quick at a glance differences)

looks like all the door code M in 4.0's would be M5OD-R1.. so I would think the difference in slave would be a revision to fix the notorious terrible problems the slave had in earlier years..


One of those is 10", the other 10 1/8"... cheaper one does not include the slave, the more $$$ says it does but not pictured.... I would see what other responses you get from the more experienced regarding true compatibility, but I think you would be fine with whichever one is specified for the newer.

All that said, if you go to the effort to pull the trans and put in a new clutch you should always do a new GOOD slave cylinder at the same time - since that is the weakest link and the thing that will go out on you first.
the tech library has specific info on failing slave symptoms - nothing you can do to fix it though except pull the trans out and put a new slave in.
 
I would get the clutch that fits the 96.

The flywheel changed, in 97 and older it was 6 bolts to the crank, in 98 and newer it was 8 bolts, no idea of what else changed.
 
The clutch master and line changed somewhere in there too. I think with 98 revision. I know for sure there is a line that fits older slave and a line that fits newer ones. They both connect to the master the same way but have different quick connects. I have an older master with the newer style line and slave on my truck.

I'd keep the entire clutch and slave arrangement from the 96. I highly doubt the input shaft of the transmission cares.

That's what I'll end up doing is getting clutch kit for my 96 and swapping in 99 tranny
 
Dou le check all the connections to the transmission and make sure they are the same. The same with the speedometer input. I don't know when they changed from a pick up at the transmission (in the tail housing/transfer case - I think) to the rear axle. That may have been in 1998.

You may need to keep your original transfer case as a result. It should bolt right on.
 
Seems like some of those clutch kits were self adjusting and some were not. Maybe that is the difference, I don't know. Probably safest to get the '96 part though, as mentioned the slave cylinder, hose, and flywheel are different on a '99.

The speedo cable/sensor would be in the transfer case, so yes as long as the stock one was kept that solves that.
 
If you’re going to buy your parts in advance, make sure you can return them without a penalty. I know a couple local guys who got messed up on the 6 V versus eight bolt flywheel. You don’t wanna buy two sets of them…
