I found a good deal on a 1996 aerostar 4.0l automatic 4 wheel drive.
What will i need to make the motor and trans work in my 1988 Bronco II 2wheel drive with dummy transfer case.

The sooner the better. lol

Thanks

Correction the headline says 1996 but it appears it is a 1994/5
so this should be plug and play right?

Hello

Its orb2 computer so all the wiring for motor and transmission. Oil pan I'm not sure but a Ranger 4.0l would bolt on. For the rest I'm not sure.

igiveup

so does the 1994 need all the wiring too or is it the 1996 that changes cause from i get from wiki is that the 1996 is way different from the 1994

No 4.0 swap is "Plug and play"

No 4.0 swap is "Plug and play"

No 4.0 swap is "Plug and play"

Now that I've said that I'll explain it...
On ANY RBV built with a 2.9 lacks the wiring for the 4.0's EDIS system

So even on an '90-92 Ranger with a 2.9 requires swapping the
ENTIRE engine bay harness. (an '89 is essentially identical)

With an aerostar NONE of the engine wiring harness is useful
Even the on-engine harness is different because the main harness
approaches the engine from above and in front of the engine, the
Ranger/explorer wiring approaches from the passenger side.

On the Aerostar 4.0 the accessory brackets are all the same as
a Ranger/Explorer as is the oil pan, but the dipstick and exhaust
manifolds are different.

The basic engine IS "useful" but there's stuff, a lot of stuff, that you are
gonna have to change...

I've seen a couple of obvious swaps in the junkyards

I've actually seen two 4.0's swapped into Bronco2's

But I've also seen half a dozen incomplete swaps where it
was fairly obvious that someone was working over their
own ability to attempt the swap and subsequently never finished it.

IF the Aerostar engine runs that's a good enough reason to use it.
But you are also going to need to seek a junkyard donor to provide the other parts.

as 4.0 swaps into RBV's that already have Injection doing it to a Gen 1 is
as difficult as it gets with the only increase in difficulty being to attempt
the swap on an earlier Gen1 with a carb 2.0/2.3/2.8 engine.

Be aware of what you are getting into, it's a big job but not impossible
and it IS easier than a V8 swap.

But having dilusions of "how easy" it eventually leads to being disillusioned
when you run into any of the major stumbling blocks

We can talk you through them, but there is NO "plug and play" swap
on gen1

I've DONE a Gen1 4.0 swap.

I DRIVE a Gen1 4.0 swap.

I know.
