Hi, I recently rebuilt my 1996 4R55E.
I lost reverse first.
The issue when the transmission started failing was 2-3 flare and then loss of drive completely (blowing smoke).
I removed the transmission, discovered that the valve body gasket was blown.
I also found that the forward clutch assembly was completely toasted.
I replaced all of the gaskets, o-rings, clutches, and frictions.
Here we are now, with only reverse.

I am stumped, I made sure that the valve body was torqued to specs, it aligned perfect with no issues, but still nothing. The shift linkage is in the proper position.

Any ideas?

Welcome to TRS :)

Reads like the new one-way clutch is not working, was it OEM replacement?

Did you replace the main pump/front pump?
Always best to do that when you're that far in, and only use Ford pump
Not the problem but just a heads up

Reverse in all automatics requires the highest fluid pressure to engage(150psi+), which is why its the first to go when gaskets and seals start to blow out, forward gears are usually fine with 125psi
Since you have Reverse then pressure is good
