I was in the junkyard yesterday and saw a 96 4.0 explorer with cruise control. I said what the heck, so I got the servo and the master cylinder. Of course, the cable won’t work and looking online I could not find a cable for a 2.3. But I did find one for a 98 2.5. Will that work? I have also heard of people getting the cable for a 3.0 and modifying it. Anyone have any experience with this?

I never got around to documenting it, but I'm running a 4.0 servo in my '94 2.3 by rebuilding the cable with some combination of B07FQW9K4R and B00BLGKQEC. Just looking at the pictures, it seems like I would have mostly used the first one, but I can't remember.

Basically you need the servo and the plastic throttle body cable end, then you can build the cable in the middle entirely aftermarket. I slipped some rubber hose over the servo end of the sheath and epoxied it to the servo.

You also need a donor/NOS clockspring.

Thank you so much! I will look into that. Do you know if the explorer clock Spring and switches will work in my Ranger?

Also, can you post a picture of your set up?

Not sure on the Explorer. Per product fitment listings, the buttons should be the same, but the clockspring is not. I'm also curious if that's legit and, if so, if it's a physical or wiring-only difference.

I'm also not sure how valuable pics would be. My homebrew setup is on the '94, which is the old vacuum servo system. My '95 with the same servo as yours is native 4.0. I guess you can see how I sheathed the ends of the cable:

Thank you. Do you think a 2.5 cable would be a good fit?

No clue whatsoever.

It would make sense if it did, but as long as it's not bolt-on you're rebuilding it anyway, so if it's slightly different I feel like there's no advantage--unless the difference is that it's like 1" longer, and you can cut that down instead of making the whole thing from scratch.
