I wasnt sure where to post this since im new to the boards.
ive been looking at rangers for a while now and i found a 1995 Ford Ranger 4cyl. 5speed 4x4. did the 4cyl really come in 4x4? i asked the guy for pics and stuff but he said it has manual locking hubs and it has a shifter to get it in and out of 4WD.

so what im asking is did the 4cyl really come in 4x4 and how are the 4cyl power wise? im moving to a place where their is alot of hills and the winters can be brutal. am i gonna beable to make it up some hills with it or should i just forget about it and start trying to find a 4x4 V6

Yes, they made a 4 cylinder 4x4 in the 95 Ford Ranger. I have that same year and engine but mine is 2wd. I would say with the proper gearing and not getting too crazy with the tire size you will be fine.

I have a '89 ranger 4x4 with a 2.3, it has a fair amount of miles on it and is rated about 5hp less than a '95, there's this one steep hill on the highway around here that's about 1/2 mile or so up, I have to put it in 4th and keep it at 3000rpm and still go from 55 at the bottom to 50 at the top (depends a lot on who's in front of me)

this is with 4.10 gears and 31" tires, it holds it's own on flat and level ground, but needs some RPM to take on hills...

I had 94 4x4 2.3L with manual tranny and manual 4x4 gearbox. Good on gas after tune-up but sluggish on power. I'd had to climb hills (Virginia hills) in 3rd and would keep the shift point between 2500-3000 rpms.
The 2.3L is a good tight engine. At 189,XXX it didn't smoke or use any oil.

if you wanna make it up that hill in 4 th no problem , switch out your fan for an electric one, no joke an estra 5 houres really helps when you need it

yeah thats umm 5 horses

i switched mine and ended up breakin my motor mount so be carefull with that extra power

Rule of thumb--never climb a hill in a gear you can't accelerate in--you are overloading the motor.

If you are in a gear that pushing the pedal more doesn't cause some gain in rpm, downshift.

Follow that with any motor and it will last a long time.
