So I’ve been learning a ton about this Ranger of mine on here and I have a new question. I think my idle should be around 800 when warm but it’s at 1100 and won’t drop below that. What can cause this on a 95 4.0? What should I test without throwing parts at it. When warm the idle is a little rough not bad but definitely not smooth. It also blows black smoke when I give it gas in park. It will not blow black smoke unless it’s floored

I read something about a Clear Flooded Engine mode and holding the gas down then turning on the key to see if it starts. Mine does and I do t think it should.
Any thoughts on where to start would be great.

binding throttle cable or linkage..... throttle plate is tipped open. vacuum leak dirty iac...

I assume no CEL(check engine light) with engine running?
And CEL does come on with key on so you know the bulb is not burned out

Yes, 1995 automatic 4.0l should warm idle at about 800-850

On the upper intake throttle body is the IAC(idle air control) Valve, looks like a can on its side
It has a 2 wire plug in
With engine warm up and idling, unplug this 2 wire connector
IAC Valve should close and RPMs should drop to 500-600 or engine may even stall, either is good
But this would mean the computer is setting the 1,100rpm idle

If idle doesn't drop then you have an air leak/vacuum leak in the intake area

Do the test and you will then have a direction to go
