Our son has a 1994 Ranger.

Today he pulled out of the driveway and got a 1/4 mile down the road and it stopped.

When he tries to restart it makes a whining noise. He said there was some smoke & there was a burnt smell when we opened the hood.

Don't have a clue where to start. Thinking it may be the alternator, but a more knowledgeable opinion would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hmmm...smoke and a whining noise...could be a belt burning because something seazed up...have someone crank the engine and watch the belts...if you see something that is not moving with the other movements then that is your problem...

If the Ranger has power steering it could be one of two things...alternator or power steering pump...

If the engine doesn't turn over and you still hear a whining noise it could be the starter is not engaging or your battery is about pooched...but that could be because the alternator seized...

So...start out with someone watching the engine when you try to crank it...

Alright, we got the serpentine belt off, and the power steering pump is locked up. It looks like the power steering pump is also part of the air conditioning. how do we go about at getting this pump off?

4 bolts hold the AC compressor on. Do NOT disconnect any AC hoses. You will have enough room to maneuver it out of the way. After that, undo the PS hoses. I believe there's 3 bolts holding the bracket/PS pump onto the engine block. Remove the whole assy.

You will need a special puller to remove the pulley from the pump. Grab a new pump and reinstall the old pulley or grab a new pulley while you're at it.

Good luck

Oh, and I would grab a new Serp. belt while you're at it.

Dang, A/C too...so it could have been three things...lol...

If you don't have a manual like Haynes or Chilton, you can try searching for your vehicle on this site...it's the AARC on-line repair manuals for most vehicles...

It usually covers most repairs and has some diagrams showing what the parts are...just enter the year, make, and model and you should get a list of topics that will help you remove the offending part.

If you have a camera, take pics of the before, during, and after so you can have something to reference in case you get lost...something I don't usually do and always end up with a few spare bolts...
