i just started my truck for the first time since i swapped a new 4.0 ohv engine into it, it has the m5od transmission, once started it made a constant horrible grinding noise, sounded like it was coming from the right side by where the engine connects to the transmission and sparks were coming out by the back of the right front wheel well, any ideas of what this could be?

did you happen to use a 4.0 auto (or 2.9) starter?

Bad starter that the starter gear isn't retracting or is going out past the end of the flywheel and getting stuck and causing the sparks possibly.

Right side of the engine, so passenger side?

I would pull the starter and have a look, at the starter and the flywheel

yes passenger side, and ok, i dont see why it would do so i mean the starter and the flywheel are both brand new first time ever started, what would cause a starter to not disengage?

its too dark out now i guess ill manually turn the engine over tomorrow and see if it binds or anything

If it happens to shoot the starter gear out too far, as in not shimmed or not shimmed properly and it happens to get hung up on the other side of the flywheel it can tear things up pretty quick. If its a rebuild or remanufactured starter sometimes they don't rebuild them correctly and get bad parts which can lead to a bad bendix spring that can cause it to stick, also a bad starter solenoid stuck closed will cause a starter to stick in the run position, had that happen 3 times on my bronco 2 where the solenoid failed and I had to disconnect the battery to get the starter to stop spinning.

Check it out and get it fixed, anytime sparks are flying its a bad sign anyhow.

I have the same engine. The starter is on the driver's side isnt it? My guess is that a bolt backed out of the pressure plate.

That's quite possible, I had bolts lose on the flywheel on my 84B2 and it caused a horrible knocking noise which I initially thought was a rod about to exit the engine block.
