Hey guys new here but have done alot of reading in the fourms here in the past and just now a member. Well have read alot about this before posting now. I have a 94 ranger 2.3 federal not the calfonia model. When first started cold it does not make any noise but after warm up it devlops a chip cricket type of noise. So far i have replaced the timing belt, the timing belt tensioner, alternator, fan clutch, changed plugs and wires, new theromostat and the serptine belt. Thought maybe cam sensor but this model does not have one just a dummy shaft. The truck drives and runs fine besisdes after driving for a bit if i stop to go somewhere and the truck is off for 15 mins or so. When i go to start it starts up than amp gauge bogs down starts to run rough than picks back up again. Iam lost and any help would be great the only other option i can think of is maybe the serptine belt tensioner. Will check that and other pulleys again tomarrow Thanks

could be the serpentine belt...but first locate were the sound is coming from and you might get an idea

just took the serptine belt off and started the truck with just the crankshaft turning. The noise was still there and sounds to be coming from the harmonic ballance not sure any ideas thanks

My first thought without reading all of the stuff was also the belt tensioner. I've had 4 go out in my life on Ford vehicles (different cars)

Possibly the water pump. It could be on its way out. Can you rotate the crank by hand with a wrench? Can you slightly hear it then?

I'm sure someone else will chime in soon.

i can with a big wrench but cant turn fast enough to hear the noise but with it running and not belt on i climbed underneith and can hear the chirp loader by the harmonic balance. I do know that when you pull the balance off than there is a crankshaft pully hub behing that not sure how to tell if it is one of these ? Thanks

Unfortunately the only way to tell is to pull the balancer and look. I can't think of any other way to inspect a bearing if you can't tell by turning the balancer.

yeah thats my next thing on the list to do but what should i lokk for on the balancer or the hub not used to being to seperate parts

Chances are, it is the AUX shaft bearing that is connected to the timing belt or the idler/tensioner.

My friends 88 does the same thing.

i have changed the timing belt tensioner when i did the belt what a pain there is there anyway to try to determine where to go next figured i would try and pull crankshaft hub and check keyway on hub seen a few uther posts where they were worn out
