1993 Splash build

Part # 2300 is the right ones prob. I will never forget that haha

You make it sound like such a trek.

I can get from your house to the light in less than 3 minutes when the roads aren't covered in ice. And that is without trying.

Haha, no, it's just an inconvenience is all. One Advance Auto has one seal, and I have to go clear to Montoursville to get the other seal. :annoyed:

Silly city boys. I think the closest parts store to my house is farther than your house to Montoursville Advance.

I once walked from my apartment at the corner of 4th and Rose to K-Mart because it wasn't worth driving there for a tube for my bike tire.

Okay, backlash is set at 0.008" and pinion pre-load is at 12 lb/in. Here's the pattern I got. Any suggestions or does this look fine?

Coast:

That looks pretty typical of the pattern on every diff I open up.

I didn't like the drive pattern so I added another 0.002" shim to push the pinion further and got a much more acceptable pattern. Backlash was pushed up to 0.0085".

New drive pattern. ( coast pattern looks identical to the first photos )

are you covering your entire surface with marking compound? cause if not, it looks like your contacting the outside of the ring gear, and your pinion is way too far in. id also put a little tension on the pinion flange while your spining the ring gear.. it makes the pattern more visible.

Brad, you only need to paint about 4 teeth, this way if you need to change, its easier to spot. But it looks good to me...

are you applying a load when you check your pattern? if not, then youre pattern wont be accurate...

Whats the best way of creating a "load"? I just used a breaker bar/socket and turned the pinion.

Just take and hold the pinion yoke with your hand and rotate the ring gear by hand, you don't need a lot of load, but enough for the gears to mesh and mark a pattern...

:icon_thumby: Thanks bro! That worked like a charm.

Just a quick update. Got the axle put together. Final backlash was set at 0.007"

Now that looks much better.
