I have a 93 Ranger 4.0 4X4 and have never had any issues with the 4X4 in the 550,000 miles I have put on it. Yesterday I started it up and the 4X4 light on the push button switch and on the dash was on. I tried the push button and it would not go off and I did not hear any solenoid engage/disengage sounds. I checked the under side and the front driveshaft was disengaged. Do the shift control modules go bad ?? This is territory on this truck I have not investigated before so I am a bit at a loss as to where to go and what to check on it to see what the issue may be. I have a print out of the circuit for the transfer case but in truth I really do not know where to start with it. So if anyone has had to deal with this issue can you please chime in as I would like to get this fixed before the winter sets in here. Hopefully this is a simple issue. Thanks
Update - I downloaded the 2 articles on system diagnostics for the truck and have run thru all the tests and up to the point of the testing the module everything has come back as testing good so I am thinking it could be the the transfer case control motor that has gone south on it.
