Hello,

I just bought a 1993 ranger 4.0 2wd auto and the transmission (a4ld from what I've read) is giving me trouble. The only thing that works is park. If I put in reverse and give it gas it goes forward...same in drive, 2nd and low. It seems to be binding up because you have to give it a lot of gas before it will move, but it will actually squeel the tire and doesn't seem to slip or make any noises. I haven't driven it far enough to see if it's shifting...I want to avoid any further damage. Needless to say, I'm baffled...especially when it goes forward in reverse. Any and all help is appreciated.
Also, is it possible to pull the trans without removing the exhaust?
Thanks

If you put the trans in reverse and it feels like it is binding, and you have forward even in neutral the forward clutch is welded together and needs to come out. If no binding and you have forward all the time the linkage inside is loose and manual valve came off
