1993 Instrument Cluster...

Howdy guys, as my profile states, I've got a 1993 2WD Auto. the cluster doesn't have a tach, and I'd like one, preferably without the ghetto double sided tape ones you see in the store next to the fart cans and plasti-chrome pedal covers. Would it be possible to swap a dash from the same year with the tach into mine without modification? I understand I'd need to swap the odometer out and possibly run the tach wire, but other than that, it should be plug and play, correct?

I added a tach to my ride awhile back. When I had the cluster out of another donor and looked the connectors were the same. Was able to use my original odometer, just needed the proper guages for gas, oil, etc. The guages pull right out, they are plug in, and easy to do. You can access them very easily by just removing the clear plastic covering the cluster, and with a bit of wiggling they will come free. Took a bit of looking to get the same color combination for the face plates, but can be done. The wire for the tach is already in the connector, so you don't have to run a seperate wire for it. Go into the forums and search a bit, there are a couple of threads dealing with adding a tach if my memory serves me correctly. Thats how I got the bug to put one in my ride, works nice, and cost very little to do. If you take the clear face off, you won't even have to disconnect the odo cable.

I went to the wrecking yard and picked up a cluster for 50.00 went home removed cluster w/o tach and installed cluster with, works like a champ. when manufacturer builds harnesses they build one (cost savings) so go buy a cluster you want and install. Happy Hunting.

Yup, just plug and play. You might want to ask around and see if anyone on here has one that they want to get rid of. If I remember correctly I got mine fore like $15.

I put a tach cluster in my 94 2wd 2.3l and it didn't work. If I put high beams on gauge lights come on. Tach doesn't work. Do I need a certain year or chip on it.

Just did the swap about a week ago. It was cake.

Now since your auto, BEFORE you remove the cluster you have to unbolt the section that has the trans display (P/R/N/D/3/2/1) because otherwise you will break it. It just pops down in.

There are two plugs on the back of the console, you squeeze the sides and they come off, sometimes they can be tight as hell.

The speedo cable can be tricky to get off, I had more trouble getting it back on though. You need to figure out where the tabs are and once again squeeze and pull.

Then it's out!

Once you get it out, it should pop apart. Just tug at the pieces. Then just put the center speedo and odometer in.

Then plug it back in and your golden!

Probably one of the easiest things I've done.

By the way, the large trim piece is mostly clips but there are two screws/bolts by the ash tray. Be easy on it because the clips are easy to snap off.

If you have tilt wheel it's SO much easier to do. This is also a good time to clean the cluster up a bit.

Also, unhook your battery.

Oh, and you can get a cluster from 1989-1994 I think. The year shouldn't matter. Mine came from a '94 but my truck is a '93. Works fine. I would stick with 93/94 if you can because those are the only two years that I can promise will work.

my truck is a stick so no prnd to worry about. i got a cluster from a 4x4 5 speed ranger 2.9l didnt even check year. but the cluster has tan symbols instead of blue. i put the tach cluster in and nothing works high beam ligh stays on and if i flash high beams backround lights come on.

I'm not sure about your issue, that's odd.

Did you plug it in correctly? I've heard that occasionally you need to repin the plugs.

Your cluster is from a 92 and is wired differently from a 93 and beyond. It can be used but you need to change the connector wiring. That job is easier than it sounds.
