1993 Ford Ranger. Sometimes wont start! Help

Hello all! Ive been on this site multiple times to look for help on my ford ranger.


Overall.. you guys all seem awesome and I am in dire need of help. I have put about 2,000 dollars into my current 1993 Ford Ranger. Its gotten a new crank shaft, crank sensor, radiator, fan clutch, pump relay, fuel filter and a new spark.

I've put so much money into my truck because it use to overheat and not start at all. Now I am still facing this same problem from time to time. I was just at the local wal greens and my truck would not start at all. It would turn, you could hear the spark, but it wouldn't start. So I push the gas while I turn the key and it starts up fine. I get home. Shut off the truck and it starts up fine. Without even pushing the gas. It starts up four times after that. I cant figure out this problem. I honestly am new to cars and working on them. I am almost at the end of the rope with my truck and thinking about having to ditch it to buy a new car! Even though I don't want to, and am a broke college kid! I love my ranger but need help!

BTW my truck has over 300,000 miles on it. Its ran great all the years its been in my family.

My only guess is its my trucks fuel pump.. That is all I got. Even though my mechanic thinks it isn't the fuel pump, I don't even know how to tell IF it is the pump itself.


Ive had people say it sounds like my truck isnt getting any gas.. I have no idea how I can tell.

Any suggestions or advice is needed!

Check your relay for your fuel pump pull it out tweet the fingers a little bit to make sure it's getting good contact. I ran across that same problem before

Clean or replace your IAC. Cleaning it is free.
Use any solvent, clean the shaft. Thwock it against your palm to make the plunger slide back and forth.

Might help. IAC controls idle and has a big role when starting.


Also, listen for your fuel pump before cranking the starter. Key to Run, it should run for 2 seconds, Key to Off, repeat, THEN crank it over, see if that helps.

So, last night I decide to take it out for a spin. I park it downtown, leave and come back after about 45 minutes. Wont start at all. It turns perfect, Can hear the spark but no luck.

One time it turns, starts, sputters and than dies. Cant get it to start at all. I call the tow truck. I try to start my truck again, no luck. Five minutes later the tow truck driver gets to where I am parked. He asks to give it a try, and it fires right up for him. I am able to drive home with no worries. I am baffled.


This morning it starts up perfect. Take it to get gas, starts up perfect. I get home and decide to test it. I turn it off and fire it up. Starts fine. I do it again, but this time I have to hold onto my key longer while turning the ignition. Starts up. I try it again, no luck. Wont start. Any thoughts???

My mechanic just put in a new relay about last week... Should I still tweak it??

Im sorry this may seem dumb! But where is the IAC..? Im new to working on my own car. I am trying everything!!

What kind of noises should I be hearing from the fuel pump??

I just posted an update if you guys have any clues as to what might be my problem!

and To answer your other question I had the filter replaced already.

Its like.... when I havent driven it for awhile it runs fine. But say... I shut off the truck and try to start it up ten minutes later, itll start shaky, or not at all.

the connector is right at the the sending unit which is on top of the gas tank you can take that cover that surrounds the top of the tank if you have one and then you should be able able to get in there and take the connector apart and look inside at the the terminals to make sure there not corroded if they are clean them out with some electric cleaner and a q-tip and dry out then put some electric grease in there to coat terminals.

My ignition module? Ive had this looked at as well.

When its cold.. (Hasnt been started in a few hours) it fires right up. But if I turn it off, and try again, its hard to start. I have to hold the key in the ignition. It sounds like its about to die and then it starts. NOW if I try to shut it off and start again, it probably wont start at all.


Now I just had someone fire it up while I listened to the fuel pump area,

I heard a noise and then a pop while it started. Had him shut it down and start again.. it was hard to start and then I heard the pop again. Not sure what that is?

I may try this.. but I did have a mechanic work on my truck. Im not sure if he checked this out. Ill ask.

Im at the end of my rope guys! This is rough. I just cant figure out whats wrong with this!
