I have a 4.0L//V6 1993 Ranger XLT with 95k miles...of late it has been difficult to get the MANUAL transmission into 1st gear and yesterday 3rd gear, while driving, does nothing. It is as though there is no 3rd gear as the engine just revs (like you are in neutral) all other gears work ASIS...

Q: WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
Q: WHAT ARE SOME SOLUTIONS
Q: WHAT IS THE BEST/LOWEST COST WAY TO GET THIS FIXED?

My sense is a total rebuilt tranny would solve the tough to get the shifter into first and "there is not third gear" problem. Either way, would love to know what the problem is.

something is scattered inside the transmission. these units usually dont fail very often and are a common item, so i would recommend a junkyard replacement over a costly rebuild. while your swapping them, do a complete clutch job as it sounds like you need one (hard to get into 1st).

you and me

I just lost 4th gear wed, and AllanD says he has seen thease trannys loose thrid twice and but never 4th.

You might as well get some shop space lined up and pull that tranny, you got internal probs and you won't know what, like I did, until you get it disasembled.

The tech section has dead on instructions to get the trans open to se what is wrong and it is not that hard at all. Plus you get plenty of support here when evr you need it.

Sorry bout yur prob, stuff happens...

BTW the price of the kit I am useing is $260, but it includes all shafts, gearclusters, bearings, syncs and gaskets. You can just get single items if you want I just prefer an extensive rebuild,I kind of like m/truck.
