Hey everybody, I know it's been forever since ive been on here, but I have a question. I have a 1992 toyota tercel 1.5 It burns a little oil at startup then the blue smoke goes away, I know that valve seals are a problem for these cars/motors, and I'm pretty sure thats what it is, but has anybody else had this problem? I don't have a whole lot of money so I can't just go buy a different car(or ranger), but I have access to a few tools, and my dad used to be a mechanic, so should I try and fix the head my self or take it to a shop? Thanks

If you have the tools, I'd try fixing it myself for a learning experience. If it can't wait and you need the car, I'd take it to shop to get it done. Like you said, your dad used to be a mechanic, I'm sure he'll help if you decide to do it yourself. It really shouldn't be that hard to replace valve stem seals. How are you liking that little car anyhow? I used to have one before I starting driving the Ranger I drive now.

I may decide to do it afterall, I really dont have that much firsthand experience when it comes to valvetrain, but I'm not totally new to it, and as far as how the car is going, well it has an exhaust leak from the flex pipe, it has 178,1xx miles on it, I just put new tires all around, and other than the oil problem I need to replace both CV shafts, overall not a bad car considering I traded a new $100 ish battery for it from a friend. I used to run it while it overheated all the time(I know NOT good to do), but I fixed that problem, and the good thing is it has AC, PS, PB, and M/T. P.S.- I figured somebody might say something about the oil being related to the overheating, truth is I don't know both problems existed before I got the car.:icon_cheers:

just throw in some high milage . it will help and keep it from getting worse plus its old its gonna smoke just treat it good and drive normal it will be fine
