1992 ranger steering problem

my steering wheel has alto of slop in it and i was wondering if there was some way to tighten the steering column without buying a new steering box,can you tighten the steering box?
 
There are chances it's not your steering box, but lots of slop in the components following the box. Did you inspect those first?
