I have the push button system. It will go into 4HI just fine, but won't go into 4LO. I've never messed with it, but is this problem in the shift motor?

Yes, it likely is the shift motor.

I'd take the motor out, examine it, lube it up the cam (if it's still intact) and then put it back together and attempt to adjust it. If that doesn't work, it's time for a new shift motor. I paid $70 for a new one last year and put it on the shelf. My shift motor would not shift the transfer case into either 4WD Hi, or 4WD Low. After repairing the cam and lubing it up I was able to get it in 4WD Hi. Since my '93 Ranger is a plow truck and only used in the winter... that's the way it sits. Someday I'll install the new shift motor; but it won't be this year... or maybe the next.

What do you have to lose by an attempted repair?
