I am looking to buy a 1992 Explorer that has a problem with the transmission. I think this has the A4LD, right? The onwer says it shifts fine if you start off in Drive but will not go if you start off in OD. Says if it is moving in second gear or above and shifted into OD it will work fine. He thinks it needs a new transmission. I did a search on here and saw some mentions of an OD solenoid. Could that be what is wrong or something else? The Explorer seems to be in pretty good shape and is really cheap because of the transmission problem. If it is something easy and cheaper to fix than a whole transmission then it would be worth it for me to spend the gas money to go look at it. Hope someone can shed a little light on this.

Sounds like the sprag in the overdrive hub is bad and not holding and when you put it indrive it turns the coast clutches on to take the place of the sprag.....Time for an overhaul.
