My buddy has a '92 explorer with a 4.0 and automatic. They bought it with the tranny not working...guy said it needed a torque converter. So we took it in and had the torque converter rebuilt. Put it all back in and nothing. Truck would never start with key, always had to jump it under the hood. But once we got the tranny and new torque converter put in, we noticed a neutral safty type switch that had a bad connector. We replaced the conector and the truck now starts with key but when you go to put it in gear, it does nothing. Everything hooked up right, linkage is good but it just sounds like a ratchet as you go from park to 1st and then back up. Its like the linkage isn't hooked up but it is. This is her only car at the moment and really need to get it going for her since she has 2 little girls and cant afford a shop to fix it. Any help would be great. Thanks alot.

You might want to check that the gear selector cable is properly adjusted. Part of it is out in the open where the engine and trans meet and can get bumped and/or damaged when the trans is worked on. There is also a procedure for seating the torque converter which can cause problems if not done exactly right. Good luck.:icon_thumby:

There is a "Z" bar likage in the pan, check and make shure there is a little flat clip holding the bar in.

A bad/blown pump would do the same thing.

Low and or no fluid would cause no movement.

valve body loose and or leaking very bad.

also where abouts in CA are you?

Thanks for the info guys. I am located in the Valley, in a town called Hilmar. Its about an hour and a half south of Sacramento and an hour north of Fresno. I will relay the information to my buddy about the trans and will get on checking everything. Thanks again.
