I have a 1992 Ranger with a tired 2.9L with a 5speed manual. I picked a 1992 Explorer 4.0L engine, wire harness and computer, but this had an automatic Trans behind it so I know the wire harness and computer will not work for this swap.

My question is will a computer and wire harness out of a 1992 Mazda Navajo that Had a 4.0L and manual trans work???

If you have a 1992 Ranger truck M/T
and you have a engine out of a 1992 explorer A/T
a computer out of a 1992 Navajo M/T. Why would you need to change the wire harness? The truck harness is for a M/T, the computer match the 4.0L with a M/T and the Engine has the harness which connects the coil pack and injectors to the main harness. Unless Ford put differnet connectors on the 4.0L engine harness or pinout that connector differently than the 2.9L harness. I cannot believe Ford engineers would be that stupid.

Ecu

we are using a 91 4.0 auto ecu in a 89 4.0 manual with no probs.:icon_thumby: Just cant do vice versa.

get a haynes manual it will have the wiring diagrams in it,
it will show ya that ya just have to switch a wire or two

Thanks Guys,
1. I have the 2.9L engine and engine bay wireharness out.

2. I have the 92 Explorer 4.0L ready to go in. It looks good (I forgot my camera at home so I don't have any pictures yet!)

3. I cleaned (pressure wash the engine bay) and put the 92 Navajo engine bay harness in and have all of the connection figured out. So far as I can tell this is completely plug and play. All of the 1992 harness are direct connect Navajo computer harness to explorer engine harness and Navajo engine bay harness to Ranger firewall plug.

I will be putting the engine in on 10/29/2011 which is next Saturday. I will get some pictures of the engine while it is still out of the truck so I can show all of the connection plugs. I want to get some pictures of the engine bay before I put the engine back in as well to show all of the harness connetion points. So far this is going easier than I thought is would, but until I get the engine to start-up and running I'm still holding my breath:-)

WOW, I cannot believe how simple this was.

1992 Ford Ranger MT Truck
1992 Ford Explorer 4.0L engine AT
1992 Mazda Navajo 4.0L wireharness and computer

I pulled the 2.9L out of the truck.
Pressure washed the engine compartment and pulled the computer and wireharness out from the firewall forward.
Replaced and bled the clutch slave cylinder.
Installed the Navajo wireharness and computer.
Installed the Explorer 4.0L and connections to wireharness, connected all of the vac lines.
Installed the radiator, filled with water, filled oil, put in the battery, bled fuel rail.

Crank the motor over and it started right up!!!! No splicing wires.:-)
I was very lucky to fine 1992 4.0L and a 1992 wireharness for my 1992 truck:-)

I still need to replace the throttle cable.
I still need to put the headlights and grill back on(these are new and I planned on replacing these before I decided to swap the engine).
I still need to redo the interior and paint.

I installed the new trottle cable and put the headlights, grill and hood back on. Took the truck for a test drive on a country road. Truck runs strong, idle is rough(probably caused by improper hookup of the vacuum lines or something simple like that).

Did not have any tail lights (no back running lights, no turn signals, no brake lights). Found I was missing the O/BL(pin 11 on round plug) and G/BL(pin 19 on round plug) wire from the main round plug at the firewall to the plug connector that goes to the transmission harness. Pulled those wires out of the original harness and pinned them into the new harness and got the brake lights and turn signals working, but still don't have running lights out back and not sure why that is.

All front lights work. The new electric fan I ordered from LMC truck works great(in the 125 mile drive home the truck ran a little on the cold side so I need to adjust the fan thermostat). No charging from the altenator, had it tested and I end up replacing($136) ouch! Guages all work.

I used the wrong paint on the headers and it all burnt off, didn't smell real good:-(

All in all I'm real happy with the swap. Still have a couple of loose ends to tie-up. Back running lights and I think there may be something wrong with the transmission mount(I get a strange feel when shifting throught the gears like something is twisting like loose or broken transmission mount or engine mounts) When I inspected the engine mounts they seem perfect which is why I think it is the transmission mount. This could just be my imagenation as well:-)

Well I finely got my camera:yahoo:

Here is the 4.0L when I picked it up from salvage:

Here are all of the boxes of new parts for the swap:

Next 3 pics are 4.0L in the engine bay:

Here are 2 of the truck. Still have alot of work to do on the body and interior:

Finely got all of the lights working. The Idle is still rough, maybe the IAC valve is bad or the MAF sensor. All of vaccum line are connected. The check engine light isn't coming on so I don't think it is throwing any codes. Went for a ride in it today and the truck is running strong. This Idle issue is very puzzling?????:icon_confused:

Awesome! i'd love to do this to mine but its my only vehicle...

Yeah, I'm lucky enough to have a 2005 ford focus as my daily driver. I only had to wait until hunting season was over.

As far as I can tell mileage has not suffered any, but the engine idle is still running rough. I change the IAC valve and I now have the fast idle working correctly. I went through the EVTM again looking over the Vacuum distribution and I got a feeling I didn't get something hooked up right so next weekend I'm going to trace through the vacuum distribution and make sure everything is correct.
