Hey everybody new to the forum have lots of questions. I have two Rangers a 1991 extra cab 4.0L 4x4 automatic tranny with a 2.5" lift. The other ranger is a 2003 extra cab 4.0L FX4 Level 2 with a manual tranny. Both of the trucks have free flowing exhaust systems and the 2003 has a K&N drop in filter. I would like to put cold air intakes on both of the trucks but have not had much luck in finding them for either one. For the 2003 I was thinking about a programmer any suggestions?? The 2003 is mostly highway drivin by my fiance so looking for somthing that might help with gas mileage. The 1991 is my daily driver and hunting truck I am looking for some off road things for the 1991 like a roof mount light bar, off road front bumper with skid plate and possibly a winch mount. Any suggestions about any performance parts or anything else is greatly appreciated. Also just to throw this out there I have been looking into putting a STS turbo on the 2003 does anybody have any experience with these or any other turbo's. Thanks in advance for any help
First off, welcome to TRS!
Regarding the chip for better gas mileage, it's not going to help. It increase the fuel:air mixture, thus increases power, but decreasing your gas mileage. A cold air intake barely adds any noticeable power, but changes the throttle response and sound to something slightly more aggressive. If you want better gas mileage, buy a tonneau cover which, on average, increases 1-2 mpg. Also, keeping your ride free of excess tools/weight also helps.
Regarding your '91, the 4.0L is a great powerplant and gets 225 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm. There aren't too many power upgrades for a reasonable price; underdrive pulleys, superchargers, stroker kits, heads/intake manifold get pricey for marginal gains. The best you can do for your '91 is a solid tune-up with electrical (distributor cap, wires, plugs, etc), and headers if you feel fancy. The next easiest step for power/$ is a 5.0L swap from a mustang or Lincoln. 225 hp & 300 tq for $500 medium mileage motor, plus another few hundred for motor mounts, engine harness, serp belt, etc. Many have done it and say it's not a horrible swap process.
For your bumper, you can guy a Pro Comp light bar for $150, or get a Bully (or another brand) bumper/pushbar for $150. Many build their own tube bumpers for lights & winches (since bolt on bumpers dont allow for extra winch accessories). A light bar (commonly confused as a "roll bar" when it's not tied to the frames) is often used, and very practical & sexy looking.
I've put small turbos on civics (without the extra intercooler etc) for 2-3 extra psi of boost. It increases economy only on the highway at cruising speeds by a couple mpgs. Small impeller, as to not cause excessive drag, but enough to give an extra push.
Hope this helps, and again, welcome.
