Hi,

I'm considering grabbing a 600$ 1991 Aerostar with the 4.0l and the AWD system. So I can take the 4.0l, rebuild it and put it in my bronco 2 with a busted 2.9l

Both are automatics, but the bronco is a column shifter and the Aerostar has a floor shifter. My question is what can I use of the Aerostar in terms of the engine swap.

Harness, ECM, do I need to replace the dash? I see a lot of info about swapping from a ranger to a bronco or an explorer to a bronco, but very little on the Aerostar expect that it can be done and the exhaust manifolds are different.

Thanks

Engine is the same as a Ranger/Explorer 4.0, not sure if the exhaust manifolds are the same but I'd be a bit surprised if they were not. Transmission is the same thing, both A4LD's. Compare them, there were small changes made to wiring connectors and stuff over the years but 89 and 91 should be very close if not identical.

You will need the engine harness & ECM at a minimum. I don't know how the Aerostar harness compares to a Ranger or Explorer. I did a 4.0 swap on an 89 Ranger years ago - 94 Explorer was my donor - and I had to use the dash harness as well for some reason. Might have just been easier because the big cannon plug matched and I didn't have to re-pin it. *IF* the Aerostar has that big cannon plug and *IF* if plugs into the B2 dash harness, I would just verify that all the wires go where they need to go/re-pin as needed and use the dash harness & cluster that you have now.

Aerostars as a donor are totally viable for 4.0 swaps, just hasn't been done very often so you are in somewhat uncharted waters.
