1990 ranger prerunner

Budgets don't belong on a build.
If you don't have enough money to finish it "right"...... you shouldn't start it.
I would write down parts lists..... brand, model, price. and set a goal and time-line/price as well for each step. That is how I do my builds.

Frank

you can still do it right and have a budget, its all about searching around on the internet in the classifieds for used parts that you can pick up cheap. Im building a full race truck for 10K or less. alot of the stuff i gettin was either given to me, paid for new, or gotten dirt cheap. Setting a budget on a prerunners can be done, its just tells you how modified to can make your truck.

buying used can be a great way to save money too if your on a budget. As they are pretty easy to rebuild if just in need of soft parts(seals) but hard part's shafts, rod ends, etc can add up quick.

greart advise! i "bought" my coilovers from a 16 y/o kid who said they were shot. i gave him a hundered dollar alpine deck and a pair of wheel spacers for them. i bought new shafts and seals which came out to be $125 in parts.

so total, i spent $325 on a pair of SAW coilovers 2.0 10" stroke. springs and hardware does add up tho. i made my own hardware.

yea, ive just looked around on the classifieds section on a bunch of prerunner websites and found some pretty good deals.. like these fiberglass bedsides for 200 bucks ill probly pick up. and i think im gonna do explorer leafs in the rear with a shackle lift. decisions decisions... hah. any other suggestions would be great..

any tip on how to get this bolt out? its the coil spring bolt.. its killin me

some PB blaster all over teh bolt and nut, let it sit for a bit then if you got an impact gun, hit the bolt head with it and i should come free. If no impact, give her your all on a breaker bar :D

i pb blasted the hell out of it, lol. the impact wrench didnt have enuff juice to do it... my aircompressor must not be big enough. i broke a craftsman socket with my jack handle slipped over the end... haha. ill need to get my breaker bar from my friend tomorow. ill keep pics updated.

how long of shocks do i need with a 3" rear lift? 8"? 10" ? im wanting bilstein.... 5100, or 7100..

16" minimum. prerunners dont use the stock shock locations. Looks like its time to build a bedcage :D

16" minimum?? with lift blocks a 10" would be fine. with a bed cage even a 14" is plenty unless you have a serious leaf pack.

i was implying that they should be upgrading quite a few things back there

btw, im gonna use shackles and ford explorer leafs.... im doin away with the blocks.

not nessacarily, it depends on how far he wants to take it. ive seen trucks with 10-12" shock in a stock location and still do just fine over some good rough stuff (now you cant hit 3 foot deep whoops like that but it will work for alot of stuff). So yes, prerunners can use the stock location. all a prerunner is is a vehicle to pre-run a race course. How fast you want to do that course depends on your budget for a build.

What kind of shackles? do you want to do a bed cage or use the factory location? When you put those springs and leafs on, your best bet is to put the truck at full droop (lift the frame till the rear tires jsut start to come off the ground) then measure from your mounting point on the frame (whether it be a bed cage or factory location) to the mounting point on the axle. this will give you the max extention of the shock from eye to eye on the shock. Usually if you divide that in half it will be close to what stroke lenght shock you need (this is why we refer to shocks as a 10",12" ect. its the lenght of the shock stroke)

i want to use stock location for shock mounting, and i was gonna get some 2-3 inch lift shackles and flip them with the explorer leafs, and hopefully it will let me clear 31-1050's with flared bedsides,,,,,, which are cut out fenders for now... lol. will any double eyelet shocks work as long as they are the right length?
