i have a 8.8 ranger rear end out of a 1990 its got 3:73 gears and its an lsd asking $150 obo or might trade for certain ranger parts let me know if your interested.

Torsen or Trac-Loc?

Was there a lsd in a 90 ranger?

I'd be interested but I have to wait until late spring/summer to get it.

i honestly dont know. Is there a easy way to tell with out taking it apart?

If you pull the differential cover, you can tell right away. If you see and “s” shaped clip in the middle or stacks of plates, it’s a Trac-Loc.

If it’s a solid cylinder with a round plug in the middle where the spider gears would be, it’s a Torsen.

ill try to pull the cover and get back to you but just for future reference what's the difference because i always thought all lsd's were the same

Torsen uses helical gearing and doesn’t require friction modifier to operate. Darn near indestructible as long as the differential fluid is maintained.

Most other limited slip differentials use friction plates that wear out over time and require a friction modifier for proper operation.

There is one or two other LSDs out there like Torsen but they are not as common as the plate type.

Ford used both in Rangers.

Unfortunately no. Everything is internal. Nothing you can see from the outside. If it came from and FX4 Ranger, there is a good chance it’s a Torsen.

Here is a couple sample pics

The rear end is from a 1990 ranger correct? If it's the oem rearend it's probably not a torsen correct?

You're correct... If you are going by model year.

I think Ford started the FX4 Torsen in 02.

But that old of a Ranger is like a box of chocolates... you never know what you're gonna find until you open it up.
