I've recently purchased a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.9l 2WD. It was running great at first & I went out to start it & it just cranks. I replaced the fuel pump & it fired right up so I backed it into my garage & it bogged down & died. I've checked the fuel pressure it's all good I checked the fuel filter it is fine. I replaced the spark plugs/wires & still it will not turn over. I spoke to someone & they said it may be the crankshaft sensor or the camshaft sensor & trying to find those parts online they seem to not exist. I'm not sure where to go from here & I need to get this thing going for me.

check the TFI module.

they will cause a no spark issue when they go out. easy fix.

oh welcome to TRS!

Would it start at all if it needed one of those 2 sensors after putting a new fuel pump in it?

Welcome to TRS :)

1990 2.9l Ranger doesn't have a Crank sensor or Cam sensor, it has a distributor which is actually BOTH a crank sensor and cam sensor, lol

Anyway, when engines were made distributorless, a crank shaft sensor was added and then a few years later a Cam sensor as well
2.9l always had a distributor

You should do the 50/50 test, that will tell you instantly if you have a spark or fuel issue
Spray gasoline or Quick Start(ether) into the engine
Try to start it
If its starts and dies Spark is working but fuel injectors are not
If it doesn't start or fire then its a spark issue
50/50 instant results

Same test has been used since the 1890's and the first gasoline engines :)

IF its a spark issue then, yes, the TFI module or it's wiring were known issues
Could also be the Coil

And don't pass over any part because its "new", i.e. new fuel pump, you will end up chasing your tail one day
30 years ago new meant tested and working
New now means YOU TEST IT and we will warranty it if it doesn't work

We, DIYers, want cheaper parts, so we got them, the majority of cost savings is in LABOR, no Quality Control, its cheaper to replace a part than to test all parts, so we got warranties
