Hey guys, I drive a 1998 Chevy K1500 and I'm looking to trade it for a Ranger because 15 mpg sucks and I love Rangers anyway. I found a 1989 model at Bloomington Ford in Indiana. The specs say it has the 2.3 with a 6-speed automatic transmission and 4x4. I know the A4LD is the only automatic available in the ranger, and it doesn't have 6 gears. I was also wondering if the 2.3's could even be paired with an auto trans AND 4x4. Sounds unlikely to me, although I could be wrong. I would much rather have a 5-speed manual, but this particular Ranger is in really good shape and they only want $1495. Sound like a good buy? Any feedback, opinions, facts, and statements would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
Dylan

I believe that you'd be able to swap it to 4x4. The 2.3 is pretty common and a manual swap isn't hard to do either. Just a little research and a weekend and you should be able to swap everything how you want it.

1. No 6 speeds in Rangers ever

2. Yes they have auto's with 2.3L with 4x4, although I don't know how common they where.

Sounds like a scam, no decent used vehicles go for less than $3000 now. I could be very wrong too and someone is just getting rid of it as quick as possible. A few years ago I sold a 2yr old Nissan Frontier for WAY less than market value so I could get rid of it quick before I could no longer afford it.

That sounds like a fair price to me actually. I paid 1400 for my 89 last year. But mines 2.9 with 4wd. So for a 2.3 2wd I think you'd get it cheaper.

Rangers don't hold their price as good as a Toyota or Nissan with the same or less specs.

I sold my beat up, multi colored, 2wd 91 Toyota pickup with 220k on it for 2500 two years ago.

$1500 for an 89 anything sounds high to me.

According to fueleconomy.gov 4-cyl 4x4's only came with manual, no automatic.

Called the dealership about it today it's actually a manual gonna go check it out tomorrow

that's basically what my truck started out as... you should get low 20's in mileage with it if the engine is in good shape.

Test drove it today and the clutch makes a pretty loud whining noise as long as it's depressed....let the clutch out, the noise goes away. What could cause this? A buddy of mine said his '90 did the same thing and it never caused any problems. I also think the throttle cable may have some slack because this truck barely maintains 45 mph in 4th gear floored up a slight hill

Most likely the throwout bearing is the culprit, as when you push in the clutch pedal, the clutch slave cylinder pushes against the throwout bearing which in turn pushes on the pressure plates' fingers, removing the pressure on the clutch disc.

Here is one atop the slave cylinder

if you decide to buy it expect to spend some money on it. it sounds like you need at least a throwout bearing, but considering the trouble keeping speeds up i wonder if the clutch isnt slipping too

To accelerate above 45mph, uphill, with that 2.3, you'll NEED to select 3rd gear and get the rpms up.

It's a heavier 4wd truck with the smallest engine available.
Can't expect much power from it.
