1989 Ranger starter problem?

Ok bought a new starter and it still makes the noise, starting to kinda piss me off

Try swapping the starter drive gear out of your ranger starter for one out of a 90 escort. that's what fixed mine

Can I buy just the gear or do I have to buy rebuild kit, and is it for 1.9, manual or auto or are they all same?

As long as its a 2.9 from 83 to 92(?) Auto or manual makes no difference. Theyre all the same. And I've heard you can buy just the gear but I Haven't checked. I went to the local junkyard and paid 20 dollars for the whole starter

This. :icon_thumby:

I wen through the same issue after the original non-grinding starter went out on my 89 Ranger. Went through 2 replacements before trying the escort starter gear. That fixed it and it's been fine ever since. Yes, you can buy just the gear. I purchased mine through RockAuto.

You buy chance have a part number or what size engine it is for, the ones I am looking at are for 1.9 it says it has 11 teeth sound right?

Sounds familiar. The part I ordered was GUARANTEED PARTS SD386 from RockAuto. It's been good since April 2013.

Cool thanks I will let you know if it works

Not sure what I quoted. I just got rid of my ranger about a month ago. I did fix my starter problem. Do not waste your money on the escort and or explorer and or ranger 4.0 starter. It might work. But long run your killing your flywheel. I believe your ring gear is a 177 tooth 10 inch? Might be wrong but the original is a 177 tooth I do know that. And your starter is a 10 tooth. Explorer and escort is a 9 or other way around. Hours of research I come up with is the auto parts stores sell referbished starters. The 89 2.9l is harder to turn over than other years. The auto parts stores starters your chewing them up on the inside and killing them. Buy one from ford the original ones. 250 bucks but works. Also measure your flywheel to starter. Take the plate off bolt on hand tight take tranny inspection plate off. Believe tolerance is 0.015-0.025. Use thin wire from hardware store. Also if you got the extra money replace the flywheel in case and clutch just so you won't have to dig back into tranny. Also but the national throwout bearing lasts longer than the cheapos. Any questions email me. Dshwopper10 at gmaildotcom went threw 7 starters I'm three months.lol

Well, I finally put the escort starter gear in after I got tired of hearing it grind every time I start it, and it was day and night difference. Its not perfect but it was way worth my time, actually sounds somewhat normal. If this didn't work I was probably going to go with ford starter. I think there is something funny with my fly wheel, because with all of the fords I have owned, I have never once had to shim a starter, or its the placement on the tranny. If I have to tear back into this, I will have the fly wheel resurfaced that I took out of my 89 bronco 2 that didn't have this issue. At least I could eliminate one possible cause
