hey guys, i picked up a d35 yesterday and the guy didnt have the rear 8.8 out of his explorer yet, so he gave me one that he had lying around. he says hes sure its an 8.8 mostly because it has a plastic diff cover, and it came out of an 1989 ranger 2.9, he said it might have been changed but he still claims its an 8.8. i thought those 2.9s still had 7.5s? and did 7.5s ever have plastic covers? thanks

It could be an 8.8. My 89 STX came stock with an 8.8 with the composite cover.
Too bad you didnt get the Explorer axle. Its got 31 spline axles as opposed to the Ranger 28 spline. And the disc brakes form a 95+ bolt right on to the 91-94 Explorer axle (I'm assuming it was a 91-94 Explorer).

yes but i didnt wana wait around all day for him to take that other axle out since my buddy had to work but its only around half hour away so i might go back an get it sometime after he gets it out. but i will only be running 31s or 32s anyways

Don't really think the 8.8 came out until '90' and then only in those with the 4.0L. Who knows, the axle might have been swaped out 15 years ago. I'm one of "them" who think the Explorer swap is way over rated.

I've broke the 7.5 with my stock N/A 2.3, even though it wasn't it's fault... (2wd low pulling over a garage, rope broke, spider gear lost a tooth). Now I'm running near 200hp and plan to run 35" tires, sure the 7.5 would live, but I wanted more than 7 pinion teeth for the gears I need...

and yes, 8.8 started being used in '90 in rangers with 4.0's, there were chassis cabs out there that got 8.8's earlier than that, and maybe an option on STX's.... but the explorer axle with 31 splines over the rangers 28 splines along with the larger wheel bearings...

chassis cab is where it comes without a bed...

ok my axle tag says 3.73 75

im guessing its a 7,5...

someones in trouble
