Hello everyone I just bought a 1989 for ranger 4x4 and the tranny is stuck it feels like it is stuck in a high gear maybe stuck between two gears which I hear is common in this model. I am trying to figure out how to fix this without putting in a new tranny. I have already removed the shifter and boot to check the ball and it is in perfect shape, I looked under the truck and I am new at this so I cannot find where to acces the gears to try and unjam them. If anyone has any help at all I would greatly appreciate it.

what does it have for a trans?

You need to pull the trans. There is only one way to access your gears if you have the M5. You have to pull the trans and pop the top cover.

If you have the Mitsubishi FM146, you'll have to take off the aluminum (heat?) cover and remove the entire shifter assembly to find the gears. Then, you'll have to remove the top cover to be able to really see anything. After you find it use a breaker bar or something similar to push the tranny into the right gear (i had my foot on the clutch for this) and you should be able to see if there is any damage to it and what you'll have to fix/live with.

My 5th and reverse 'forks' are horribly smoothed out on the edges and it's easy to accidentally pop it into 4th and then actually maneuver the damn thing to the right of fourth and behind reverse! (thank you tension springs!) So now when I'm going from 4th to 5th I have to 'walk' the shifter very slowly up then way over to the right into 5th. When I'm coming out of 5th I have to pull it way to the right again and then into neutral, then from there to whatever gear is still normal.
