Are you noticing this issue only in fourth gear? How is your power in other gears? Do you have a tachometer?

My 89 Ranger pulls hard all the way up through the gears including fourth, even with a load of dirt on a long hill. It does not tick either with 100,00 miles on the clock. Sounds like there is a specific problem although I have no idea what it could be (but I'm sure someone on this site can chime in).:icon_thumby:

Have you changed tire sizes recently??
if you have gone to a bigger tire, might explain the lack of performance in only the top gear.

nope total power issue n only in 4rth gear ,i have 360k on the old beast ,im wondering if fuel injection might have something to do with it ?,my tach goes up round 6k in 4rth dont like pushing it that hard.was in a mountain pass, only takes 1./3 hr tops from sea lvl to sea lvl on either side.the malahat highway on Vancouver Island.British Columbia, Canada

If you are at 6000 rpm in 4th pulling a hill, it sounds like a slipping clutch. There is a thread currently that points out that a slipping clutch first shows up in the higher gears and works down to the lower ones as it gets worse.

The Clutch Is One Of My Suspicions.i Did It Myself 1.5 Years Ago N It Was My First

it might be a rear oil seal that is slow leaking and contaminating the clutch...not to say that the clutch isn't starting go too. either way, it appears that is the direction to head

i removed the tranny n checked the clutch ,now its stuck in gear n wont shift !,
