I just picked up this 1988 ranger that has been sitting for about a year
Here is the deal:
The guy that I got it from said that his wife was driving it around the farm and it just shut off so he parked it and it sat for about a year.

So far I have:
tested fuel pump
held spark plug to ground source and it is getting spark
sprayed stater fluid in the intake
changed out coil

I haven't heard a single sign of life from the engine yet...

I really need help because I would like to give the truck to my sister to drive to high school...

It has roughly 142,000 miles...2.9 FI v6

hate to ask the obvious....fresh gas in the tank??

take it that when you sprayed starter fluid in the intake it did not run briefly?

recheck all grounds wires, make sure they're good
double check the inertia switch , inside the cab. make sure it is not tripped
and replace the fuel pump relay, passenger side , inside fender

yes, fresh gas in the tank...and it did not run with the starter fluid

what is the inertia switch?

what is the inertia switch?

it is a safety switch (inside the cab, passenger side, about where ones left foot would rest) that shut off power to the Fuel pumps in case of an accident.

If you get Bouncing around too much sometimes it will trip.

there is a reset button on the top of it.

and they can go bad....if it is reset but no power is going through it....for temporary you can jumper wire around it.

if power is going through the inertia switch ...well ...
In general you need 3 things compression, fuel, and spark

you know you have spark.
questions remain about getting fuel.
if/is the fuel pump relay is good?

there usually is a inline fuse, after the solenoid, to the relays, check it.

how is the compression?? If the compression is good, then you down to checking wiring for the fuel pump....connections frayed wires within the harness its self.

If I understand correctly... that you do not hear the fuel pump prime as you turn the key to the "ON" position...not all the way to the start position
you should.

Ok, I just tried reseting and jumping the intertia switch but still nothing...I did hear the fuel pump prime itself....Although the truck will sound like one piston is firing sometimes when I crank it up, but rarely

Do you have any other ideas what it could possibly be?

OK...making some progress

I'd recheck the timing...or the plug wires make sure you have them in the right order...easy to do, trust me.

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_9_Page.html look farther down in the link page it has a nice picture and firing order listed...besides a ton of other info.

If that is all OK....then check for compression on all cylinders.

ALso check the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR)....a quick way is to pull the little vacuum line off the FPR and if fuel is dribbles out if the vacuum line or the vacuum port on the FPR itself...then...ya need a new one. It could still be bad...often this is what happens to them.

seeing as it has sat for sometime....can't stress enough to make sure all grounds are good.
