Welcome to TRS :)

1988 2.9l engine ICM(ignition control module) is on the side of the distributor, it is called a TFI module, not at all hard to find
You want to match the color, black or grey are the two options, there is a wiring difference, so if yours is grey then you want to replace it with a grey one, same for black

The PCM(engine computer) is a little harder, but refurbished are available
BIIs and Rangers with 2.9l engine used the same PCMs by year

Transmission type is the thing you need to match, manual or automatic
1988-1992 2.9l engines didn't have EGR so not an issue

This PCM is for 1988 2.9l manual trans: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Con...fits-1988-Ranger-2-9L-/163043518463#vi-ilComp

Automatic here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Engine-Con...e:Ford&hash=item33d90a3dad:g:PiMAAOSwi~FboMBQ

RWD or 4x4 doesn't matter in 1988
