The engine is surging bad while accelerateing in all gears at all rpms?? Any suggestions. I was told the term is trailer hitching?? Any help or suggestions would be great before I start replacing everything. Just did a tune up cap, rotor, plugs but no wires, fuel filter and is getting worse.

Make sure to pull the codes and see if that is any help. Don't know about yours, but most early trucks did not have a check engine light.

This is a 1988 ranger. I don't believe there is a place this year to run codes that I'm aware of.

Yes there is. There are some plugs under the hood. Mine were over near the pass side hood hinge. Here's how to pull the codes with a testlight. You can also use a old meter with a needle on it.
