1987 Wiper Delay

The wipers on my 1987 XLT sometimes hang up in the delay mode and often don't completely return to the OFF position until I switch them back on and turn the switch off as they hit the retract spot. Any Ideas? Is there a delay relay or is it integeral to the wiper switch?

The Multi Function Switch (MFS) was the Culprit for me, the delay portion started to turn inside the housing, causing the wipers to not turn off, and/or stop half way up.

The "return to home" function also goes through the MFS so when the switch started acting up, the home funtion went with the part that turned, thereby causing the wipers to die half way up the windshield.

Agreed, it is most likely the switch.

There are a few devices that control the delay function, but the switch is the one that goes bad the most.

Did you clean all the connectors good? There should be full time power on the red wire to the wiper motor my guess would be the wiper motor connector or the wiper motor home switch. When it is stuck up pull the motor connector apart and put it back together to see if it responds. If not tap on the motor if it returns the return switch is bad and motor needs replaced.

Red wire hot with ignition switch on not full time sorry.

Thanks guys. It doesn't do it all of the time so I'll try cleaning the motor contacts first. They haven't been touched in 26 years. The wipers work fine most of the time. It's only occasionally when I turn them off they stop whever the were when I closed the switch.
