have 1987 ranger 2.9 5 spd. truck runs good, then wiill shut off and not restart for couple hours. have changed coil, ignetion module, and triedd different computer, nothing has helped. need to get to the bottom of this. when the truckwont start the fuel pump works and gets fuel to pressure releas valve.

need help with this problem

check fuel pressure when it dies. mine did same thing finally traced it down to fuel pump so i replaced and haven't had problems since. just don't use an airtex pump. i would use a carter got mine at pepboys. also change fuel filter.

A fuel system can become temporarily clogged. I had an issue that would only occur when I would get aggressive w/ the gas peddle, like merging onto the interstate or passing. It turned out to be a piece of rubber fuel line between the tank and the filter. The debris would become clogged in the fuel line when gas consumption was elevated. After a while the debris would move back towards the fuel tank and the fuel line would be free once again. Simple answer, but maybe the fuel filter is marginal.

my fuel pump was getting hot and dying randomly i would let it sit and truck would run just fine and pressure was good. it always seemed to happen when i was away from home and didnt have any tools so it took me a long time to track down the problem. then finally it happened just as i was pulling into my drive way checked fuel pressure and it was about 5 psi let it sit and was back to normal. funny thing was it was just replaced by previous owner with an airtex (i did see the receipt) so i replaced mine with a carter and have had no more problems. it only took about an hour to replace (pulled bed and then replaced pump).... keep in mind this was after replacing fuel filter checking injector pulse fuel pump relay and inertia switch (checked switch by bypassing it however it is NOT recommended to leave it bypassed)

The above supplied ideas are all good.

I would just add that you could try taking your gas cap off when it is dieing to see if a vapor/vacuum lock is causing the problem.
