My 2.9 87 ranger has been stalling out and hard to start backup intermittently, for a few months now. Last time I drove it probably 20 miles it started bucking finally cleared up feathering the gas pedal made it to my destination and it wouldn’t start back up 4 hours later had to get it towed home, fuel pumps didn’t sound like they where working. Fired right up the next day.
Only code I’m getting is 95. I have a broken fusible link on the fender well next to battery, I suspect that may have something to do with it. I jumped the obd1 fuel pump test port to ground and relay clicks and pumps come on.
truck runs and drIves currently but I’m not sure whats causing it to stall out intermittently. ECM is 5 years old remanufactured, usually when the caps go bad wouldn’t you get more than 1 code?
 
When a capacitor went on my ECM the truck would not start at all. But maybe that problem can manifest itself in different and less black and white ways, this is just my experience. What does code 95 stand for?
 
Code 95 is fuel pump circuit open-EEC processor to motor ground. I’m getting that koeo and continuous memory
 
OK I am no expert but my thought would be to start checking the wiring to the fuel pumps. Or, if as you say jumping the relay makes the pumps come on, then check out the relay/wiring to it. Not sure what the fusible link might have to do with your issue. Hope others with more knowledge will chime in soon.
 
Definitely sounds like bad wiring on the fuel pump circuit. That fusible link could cause all kinds of problems, but if it's truly open then it can't be an intermittent problem.
 
Not sure if it would throw a code 95 but have you tried bypassing the inertia switch?

Long shot...but cheap and easy
 
Tried bypassing the inertia switch still had the same code koeo. Going to take another look at the pump wiring. If I had a bad relay wouldn’t the pumps not work at all?
 
Code 95 is fuel pump circuit open-EEC processor to motor ground.
If this is the fault, then the problem is on a ground wire between the processor and motor. Going to need the EVTM to figure out what pin that is on the EEC connector and where it goes. There are some diagrams in our tech library that are that vintage and may get you the info you need.

This problem is on the “control side” of the fuel pump relay. It has nothing to do with the fuel pump or inertia switch. The fuel pump relay COIL has 12 volts applied and the EEC connects it to ground in when it needs to energize the coil and turn on the relay. Once the relay contacts close, then voltage from the fuel pump power circuit is sent to the pump.
 
Thanks for the help! I found a pin out diagram in the tech library. Looks like 20 is the ground, I’ll try and chase that tonight or tomorrow.
 
Can anyone tell me where the fuel pump sender ground and pump ground G103 is located? Is it on the frame near the tank?
 
Could anyone with the evtm for a 87 ranger snap a few pics related to the fuel pump power distribution and ground locations? I can’t find that manual anywhere
 
Ok I’m not clear on what would be considered eec to motor ground wire. Would that be pin 8 or pin 20? Or does it mean pin 22 on the coil side of fuel pump relay?

Ok I was getting nowhere with the electrical side of this problem. The truck runs and seems to idle alright, I have battery voltage at pin 87 on the fuel pump relay with the truck running. I fixed a fusible link that was bad and found some wires that went to the fuel injection harness that were rubbed through insulation and repaired those. Cleaned a bunch of grounds. Jiggled just about every wire in the truck and can’t get it to stall out.
Checked fuel pressure today, I got 35psi KOEO that leaked down to 32psi after letting it sit a halfhour. Engine running 28psi, and with the vacuum hose on the regulator removed it jumped up to 35 psi.
These numbers seem to be on the low side, should I be suspecting a fuel pump failing?

28 is a bit low.

My 87 was/is doing something similar and i changed the fuel pump/filter and still get the same readings. It runs at 28ish untill i unhook vacuum to FPR then it jumps to 37ish.

Spec is 40. But 32-40 is generally where they are supposed to run.

I havent looked into the problem much cause ive been focused on my B2....but im wondering if its a issue with the intank lift pump.

IIRC when i scanned it i got a 95 code as well.

Pull the fuel line between the tank and black canister on the frame, turn the key on and see if fuel runs out at about a drinking fountain pace.


That being said i also wondered if it could be an odd FPR issue, but usually when those go they overfuel.

Mine is running fine though.
