I own a 1987 ford ranger xlt 2.3 liter extended cab. I am turning it into a race truck. I am going to install a turbo and an intercooler. I want to get 350+ horsepower out of the motor. Seriously. I just need help on what I have to do to do this. Money is no object here.

Since money is no object...You need to get this first:
see article on this bad boy here...http://www.nydailynews.com/autos/he...rover-mercedes-benz-g-class-article-1.1350585

After acquiring the above, out fit it with one of these (Class IV or better fitted with a 2" ball):

And then get one of these:

After acquiring all of the above, Assemble reciever and hitch to the F150, make sure the ball is in the receiver and secure. Get a good set of trailer brakes as well, and set them up properly and then hook the trailer to the F150. make sure you have good tie downs and put your Ranger securely on the trailer.

Have a friend and helper get in the F150's driver seat. you get in the Ranger's driver seat. you now have a Ranger in a 350+ horse power configuration :)

In all seriousness, if you are really wanting to squeeze 350 hp out of a 2.3 liter 4 banger, you probably need to find a speed/ performance garage (and a darn good one at that) and have them go over it. Then get ready to spend the same amount of money (if not more) on the other drive train components so they can handle all of that horsepower without grenading into deadly shrapnel.

And if you do go the second route, we will need a build thread with copious amounts of pictures to document this build.

And welcome to TRS!

Thanks I've done some work myself. When I got it it had 85 horse in it and I chipped it ported and polished the intake and also regapped the spark plugs and I've got it around 110 now. I was wondering how much a turbo, intercooler, cold air intake, and meth injection system all together would add horsepower wise

You can probably get somewhere around those figures with a good turbo installation but how long it will stay together is another story. You'll also need a tunable computer to control everything (megasquirt for instance), access to a dyno for tuning would also be a good idea. It's not so simple as just bolt on a turbo and some pipes.
There are some good threads about turbo installations on this site and also a few about megasquirt set-ups.

Hmmm you want 350hp??.......Stock crank will break after the first hard romp on the gas pedal....crank will twist, cam will snap and the valves will float up and punch a whole through the hood. Got to replace the weak components first...V8 will be better and easier to mod and last longer.

Do a Tim Taylor and put one of these in the bed.

What are the new internals that I will need

If it rotates or reciprocates you probably need it. This is the case for any motor you want to blow more than eight pounds into, you'll be looking at eighteen, maybe more.

What brand and specs do I need internal wise

This is a ridiculous thread. I can't believe you guys are humoring him.

This is not ridiculous at all. These motors have a lot more potential then anyone gives them credit for.

Not much help are they. Lots of guys running that motor in Mustangs with very good luck, just not up on modifing them myself. They really do need to be beefed up internaly. Try Google for some specialist in that field.

They really aren't I just figured I might be able to get some help if I posted something. Thank you

The Tech library is full of stuff like this, here is what is relative to the 2.3T's.

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/TurboInstall.shtml

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/turbo_swap_wiring.shtml

I am not real up on the 2.3T's other than to know they are popular enough in stangs, tbirds and Cougers that info should be out there some where.

Most of the swaps of this nature will be found in this subforum:

get a 2.3T motor, the bottom end is good to a reliable 450hp. is it one of those 8mpg/50hp chips? :icon_twisted:
