I just got my new to me 1987 4 x 4 ranger. I have never had a manual shifting transfer case. When I shift the transfer case into Neutral, the light on the dash goes out. When I shift it all the way foward for 2H it shifts and runs fine but the light stays on. I have not looked at how this switch works yet.

It's possible the shifter gate just needs to be adjusted (might be letting the lever move just far enough that it allows 4x4 to disengage, but not quite far enough for the light to go off).

Just a hunch since you said the light goes off in neutral.

There are two bolts on the side of the trans (one large, one small) to loosen & adjust it.

So it looks like I do the adjustment under a plate below the shift lever. Is there anything that I can install to shorten the throw shift lever?

Nothing that I know of offhand... (I think that would just throw the alignment of the gate sequence out with that of the shifter anyway)

If I recall, all that is needed is to put the t-case in 4-hi, then align the gate so that the step is just against the shift lever and then retighten it. Then check to make sure you can move it around the step into 4-lo and back to 2-hi.
