2.3L ('83-'97) 1987 2.3L OHC Lima Engine - EFI to Carburetor conversion questions

Hi all, first time Ranger owner. I picked up a 1987 2WD/5speed Ranger with EFI 2.3L that is halfway converted to carburetor. There is an intake manifold present, some kind of homemade carb adapter, as well as the right kind of fuel pump, and it seems the spark has been taken care of as well. According to the previous owner, a 4bbl carb "was too big and bogged it down".

I have sprayed starting fluid into the intake and confirmed that she does fire up great, so spark and compression are good at least.

Is there a small 4bbl carb available for this particular setup that would be the quickest/cheapest way to get moving? Or should I really get an adapter and 2bbl carb? I've never driven, tuned, or rebuilt a carburetor before, but I'm willing to read and get my hands dirty. I have of experience with average home mechanic tasks like swapping suspension parts or brake jobs.

I've just downloaded the Haynes and Chilton books, are there any other good books to read? I've glanced at the 2.0/2.3/2.5 family thread but HOPEFULLY I don't need to open up this engine so all the internal details are less important to me than the general maintenance stuff.
