O'Reilly Auto Parts has several listed for the 2.9. Prices range from $77 - $96. Most have a core charge added which is refundable when they receive the old one. If you have a store near you, I recommend you order it through them. If not, you can order on line.

Napa has them too, but I think you have to go to the store to get them.

I would highly recommend, as long as you need a new computer, getting an 88 to 92 non-California (unless you live in California). It eliminates a few problem spots in the programming.

i have a couple 88 computers don't remember what was what 1 is auto 1 is manual

I wonder why Ranger ECM's are not listed by OEM designated number's in parts stores? This is one item that you want to be certain you get the correct one cuz we all know what happens when you get the wrong one.

baddis.... I too have an '88 with manual in 2WD. The little Ranger doesn't even attempt to fire/hit when I installed it.

Thanks guys,
Jeff

Then the computer may not be the problem. An 88 computer should run an 86 engine just fine. I have an 88 in my 87 that is no different from your 86 and it runs fine.

Possibly....... Although I've already replaced the coil, ignition control module, stator, rotor button, and distributor cap. What else could it be? The truck was running fine, then one day, it wouldn't fire at all.

you say ICM, I say, codes ? the air temp will kill it, as well as Coolant temp.

DO a code dump from the idiot light, you might be very surprised.

they have how to do one (w/o engine running) on the tech side of this site, read and do.
