1986 ranger 2.3 rough idle and bad mpg

The lobes will show contact wear, as will the followers. Walk it through the firing order, and watch each valve for the amount it moves. If you can, measure the spring with the valve closed, and then when the cam lobe is pushing on the follower. The difference is how much the valve opened. They should all be close. If you find one or two that are not working as hard, you might look for a replacement cam at the yard, or if you have a lot of miles on the head, a replacement cylinder head complete with cam. Most are sold complete if a used combo. I think a re-man head might be another way to go.
