I went to set the timing, could not find the spout connector... finally found it ( the end melted ) .. fixed that.. set the timing to 10 BTDC and then plugged the spout connector back in.. checked the timing, it was at 20BTDC... is this normal, am I not doing something right.. Help.........:icon_bounceblue:

That is right. That means everything is working.

86 Ranger....

Hey thanks for the reply.. is it suppose to be at 20 BTDC afterplugging the spout connector in... it sure does sound like it is idling to high... is there anything else that can be done to maybe idle it down some, i know that it is all electronics.. But.......?:yahoo:

The high idle may be a vacuum leak or the idle bypass (IAC).
I'm not sure on the exact number but 20 degree is close and the computer put it there so it should be right.

I thought it was 10* BTDC...but that's on a carbed engine...EFI may be different, but you should check the manual...I've got a Haynes in the garage but not in front of me...I'll check later when I'm out there if I'm not distracted by the snow...shovelling is a PITA...

10 degree with the spout out. He put the spout back in and it went to 20. It changed so the computer is advancing the timing.

Thanks for your help....

Hello , just wanted to say thanks for your help... and please keep them coming, i can use all of the help that i can get.... isn;t the IAC BYPASS over on the air box passenger side? if so, I have replaced that..
I looked at the book that i have and it says to set the timing at 10 BTDC, with the spout out.. did that. plugged the spout connector back in, the timing advanced to 20 BTDC... so the computer is working, my question to you all is, should the timing be that high... i checked for vacum leaks some.. maybe i need to go into more detail in my search..
what else could be causing my truck to ilde high. i did notice that when i move the wiring harness on the drivers side by the coil, it revs up just a little bit... it's noticeable, but not anything crazy....
would the EGR VALVE make it idle higher than normal?

Timing advance with the spout in should be around 20 to 25 degrees advanced. So you are in the ballpark.

Bad idle can be caused by vacuum leaks, bad throttle position sensor, iac problems, pcv valve. The EGR could affect idle if it is stuck open, othewise, no.

Some of the vacuum lines are inside looms. Pull the loom back and inspect them. My 86 had an idle problem and one of the vacuum hoses going to the air box had deteriorated inside the loom.:)shady

another common place for a hidden vacuum leak is the brake booster.
to check:
Idle the engine for a few seconds.
Kill the engine.
Wait 1 minute.
Disconnect the vaccum hose from the booster. During disconnect you should release(fill?) a fair ammount of vacuum from (in?) the booster.

Just what is your idle speed?

My mechanic jsut fixed my mustang and when he put the intake back on had some drysweep on the intake gasket (I think hes lying) but supopsedly that cause high idle. It wont be a timing issue if you have high idle. Its possible something is wedged under your throttle cable. If your moving wires and it revs up something is not mounted properly. Look agian.
