Hey all. First post - glad you-all are here. Attempting to go resulted in no start. I cannot hear the usual whine (from a general behind-and-below location) that happens for about three seconds when I turn the key to the accessory position. When I turn the key all the way to start, the engine just turns over but shows not even a hint of starting. I checked the inertia switch (well, I found it and depressed the white button - no change). My understanding is that the whine is both the lift pump in the fuel tank AND the high pressure pump on the frame rail under the driver,View attachment 34655View attachment 34655View attachment 34656View attachment 34657 spinning. The fact that I hear absolutely nothing may point to the relay but, I am wanting a little confirmation I'm on the correct track. Pictured are the relays the inside of the passenger-side front fender. They don't have any markings on them and the grooves that the mounting tangs slipped into have broken off (perhaps part of the problem). Does anyone know if the fuel relay is the green one or the brown one pictured here? Am I deducing correctly? How should I go about testing to see if it's the relay?

Thanks for your time. fuel pump relay is the green box.. if you decide to replace both boxes and plug ins make sure to take note which wires go where in those plugins.. i made a mistae and threw the pigtail away after i cut it off to replace it with a JD1914 relay 40 amp.. it was laate and i done made the dumpster run

So I've had problems on almost all my frame rail high pressure pumps. It turns out the the connectors get loose and will make sporadic connection. If you trace the wires to under the rubber boot, you can pull the boot and slightly squeeze the spade terminal. Or just replace with new. That has always solved my problems.

For generic relay wiring, all relays are wired with this convention, no clue on color codes as there's no convention for that:

85 Control ground
86 Control power
87 Normally open output
87A Normally closed output
30 Input

So figure out which sides are the control/switched wires on the relay and which is the constant power and the output and that should get you there. Almost nothing uses 87A...

On my 85 ranger 5speed 2.3 efi .. there are 2 relays side by side.. one is the green pigtail plugin and the other i s black.. is the black also part of the fuel pump relay system?
I get conflicting wire color information on the fuel pump relays .

As for the commectors terminals on the rail pump.. I tool mine off and soldered the wires onto the fuel pump..i got tired of getting up and down and having to replaces those spade style connectors, this put a stop to the loose connections

Iirc black is to do with air conditioning.
