1986 2.0 starting problems

Will crank but won't start, keeps backfiring, have rebulit carb, changed both belts, new wires, plugs, gaskets, battery and terminals. set timing according to manual, checked plug wires for right order and still backfires. Any suggestions will help.

sounds an awful lot like timing to me,are you sure you're not 180 off?
